Situated
half way between Brindisi and Ostuni on a hill top just a short distance
from the Adriatic Sea are the town's houses. Carbina was founded by
the Osci and destroyed by theTarentini, who also exterminated all
the town's inhabitants.
The oldest
part of the town, is the section that was once part of rocca or castle.
The rocca was subsequently surrounded by high stone walls which included
four separate towers erected after 1390 by the Prince of Taranto.
Carovigno
fell firstly under Norman rule and later under that of the Angioini
and Aragonesi and was governed by numerous feudal rulers.
Arts
and Culture
Other than
the Castle other monuments of historical and archaeological interest
include: the Cave-Sanctuary dedicated to Maria
Santissima of Belvedere, situated at three kilometres north-east
of the town . The miracolous discovery of a piece of fresco-work,
depicting the face of the Virgin Mary, dates back to the period in
which Carovigno was under the feudal rule of the countess of Brindisi.
On the eastern boundary of the countess of Brindisi. On the eastern
boundary of the municipal territory at nine kilometres from Carovigno
stands Serranova Castle, erected at the beginning of the 17th century
by Ottavio Serra. Torre
Guaceto is an area where a natural protective oasis has been built;
the area also includes an important archaeological site .
Much loved
tourist destinations are both Specchiolla and Torre S.Sabina: the
first is relatively recent, even though its beautiful beaches have
been visited for centuries; the second has be know since the Roman
era where even today it is possible to find archeological remains
now and again .
